The saying goes that pictures speak a thousand words. This is especially true in the realm of learning biology, where pictures and movies convey and elucidate more than any text could. My 120 - 180 students will benefit two-fold from having an LCD projector in their 9th and 10th grade biology classroom. First, introduction of new material could be accomplished via presentations that include pictures, movies, and sounds. These presentations will engage my students and help them grasp difficult but critical biological concepts such as genetics, ecology, and the human immune system. Secondly, students will be able to practice making and giving presentation with Powerpoint slides. This skill set is critical, especially in the world of business and technology, which is the theme of my high school, BEST High. BEST stands for Business Entrepreneurship School of Technology. After visiting my new classroom at BEST High in West Oakland this morning and seeing that it doesn't have a blackboard, any whiteboards, or an overhead projector, I realized the urgent need for an effective method of introducing new material. Although I will be installing shower-boards to serve as make-shift dry erase panals in my classroom, the urgent need for an LCD projector still stands. Pictures and movies cannot be effectively replicated on a dry-erase board, and students need opportunities to practice making and giving Powerpoint presentations. Meeting these two needs of my students will help them better understand biology and practice critical presentation skills. Overall, the big picture is that my students will be better prepared for life after BEST High, and THAT is worth more than a thousand words! Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
