Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a large urban school district in Massachusetts. We are a Title 1 school where 80% of our students are classified as economically disadvantaged and 96% are considered “at risk.”
I have a terrific group of diverse students who are all English Language Learners from various cultural and language backgrounds.
They come to school with smiles on their faces and are eager to increase their English proficiency. My students are in grades kindergarten through 6 and present themselves at different academic and English acquisition levels. My groups vary in size from 6 to 16 but for each group our focus is always on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.
My Project
When teaching English Language Learners, visuals are important. Therefore, having a document camera and projector in my classroom would enhance learning for all of my students.
This technology supports instruction and provides students with the opportunity to access grade level curriculum where they can acquire academic language.
Visuals, such as, pictures, videos, class work, enlarging a book for all to see, etc., creates a learning environment where all students, regardless of their language level, are able to interact and connect with what is being taught.
A projector and document camera would support this important aspect of instruction and learning, which would allow students to become truly invested in their learning.
