The student presentations about the African country of Mali and slave trading were interrupted because our music teacher needed to get the digital projector back to use in the pre-K assembly. My students let out a collective "AWW" and their faces sunk. We have one projector to share for 10 rooms.
Our school serves kids from a tough inner city housing project in Illinois.
Currently, the housing units are being torn down, leaving more and more families to find housing in distant parts of the city's west and south sides. My 6th and 8th grade students now travel by city bus and train to our school. They need a safe and stable place in their lives. My classroom offers them a chance to learn and to have some connection to their old neighborhood. During a typical day I teach to 75 different students. The students switch teachers every 50 minutes or so. Depending on the group in front of me, I might be teaching reading, social studies or science.
My Project
Having a classroom digital projector would greatly enhance our classroom experience. My students' learning would be impacted by this wonderful opportunity to present material that is engaging, clear and focused. With the projector (and my personal laptop) we can write responses to literature together and save it in a Word file. With the projector (and the school's ELMO digital presenter) we can view a large image of the books that I read aloud. With the projector (and our Internet connection) we can view science and social studies web sites that offer exciting images and information which bring our weather and physics units to life. A digital projector has become as much of a necessity in today's classroom as the chalkboard was when we were in school.
Please give a small donation to this project.
Collectively, you and other generous contributors have shown so much love for my students. Donors Choose materials have transformed our book collection, our listening center and so much more. My students come from farther and farther as their housing project is dismantled. Our school, however, remains standing and they know that we are there for them. Thank YOU for being there too! This projector will make their long trip to school worthwhile.
