My students come from a variety of different backgrounds with 100% of our school's students receiving free lunch. We are located in the Appalachian area and, unfortunately, in one of the areas with high poverty and drugs. Sadly, for many of our students, the only meal they receive is at school and a big portion of our students receive backpack meals on weekends. Likewise, absentee parents and the drug epidemic impacts the students' ability to provide school supplies, school performance, as well as ability to complete assignments out side of school. Hence it is even more pressing that I provide the children with the most resources possible while they are at school. We are also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Campbell County-being one of the few to receive ESL services.
However, even with the hardships the students in my area face, my kiddos come to school with smiles and eager for knowledge.
They are the sweetest children you will ever come across and are a blessing to me every day.
My Project
Too many worksheets are frowned upon at my school. Paper is a limited commodity, too. I have a Interactive White Board to use in the classroom, so a document camera will allow me to make even more use of the Interactive White Board.
The document camera will help save on paper and copies while allowing the children to see work projected on the board.
I can also manipulate objects in math like money and shapes. I will be able to share information from all books and model examples when completing activities. I will also be able to physically model writing for the children in the room. This should make their writing better and neater.
In addition, students learn best when learning from one another.
Having a document camera would facilitate effective collaboration among students. It would allow me to model and subsequently would allow them to display their work to ensure high quality. The document camera would allow students to give and receive targeted feedback thereby creating an environment where students take pride in their work and also foster an environment of respect among all parties involved.
