Project Special Education Classroom Basics & Wishful Bonuses
Help me give my students an organized and fully equipped classroom. My goal is to have many options available to all students, school-wide, when they're in need of a break or some downtime.
Each project I create is designed to benefit all of our special education kiddos. Chances are, the general education students will benefit as well - and that is icing on the cake.
At our school, we estimate a little less than one-third of our student population falls into the special education category, whether be it a medical 504 or an IEP for an Intellectual Disability.
Additionally, our kiddos generally, and often, face some pretty tough circumstances, and yet they continue to be a source of inspiration to our staff.
We've found, across America, that in our third year of teaching during a global pandemic, the admirable resiliency of our youth is being tested to an extreme. For this, and for a million other reasons, I want to give our kiddos everything in my power to make their school year, lives, and experiences as glorious, easy and memorable as can be.
My Project
This is essentially a wishlist of some standard special education classroom needs merged with a handful of resources that will support students, both special education and school-wide.
All items listed will aid our students during their times of attempted mood regulation, stress management, energy channeling, emotional processing, and fine motor skill strengthening.
When emotionally elevated, students often respond well to short, easy and fulfilling creative tasks, such as bracelet/jewelry making ad lego building. Additionally, in our social emotional friendship groups, students are often driven to make friendship bracelets for each other when those supplies are available. Additionally, regarding our students who need fine motor skill building, digging beads out of putty is an Occupational Therapists dream request! The finger grips are also for our students who need support in utensil holding; ironically these students tend to lose these tools, so it helps to order 12! Also, it is no surprise that this year we have seen a greater need and request for fidgets and energy tools, hence the stress balls and silly putty.
Some of the other items, like the drawer organizer, the labels, the storage box are for basic special education classroom organization. Special education classrooms often have a wider range of options and activities, subsequently needing more organizational resources. Finally, the storage box is to replace my treasure chest so that I can give my treasure chest to another special educator, and the lights are for one of our first year special educators.
Our Elementary school has a very unified team. We tend to want to go above and beyond for each other and for our students.
