My Students

My little learners are extraordinary 5-6 year olds diagnosed with autism. They have very different ways of acquiring information. Our school, A. E. P., is a public K-4 Elementary School is equipped for typically developing students, however our students in room 13 need more access to appropriate tools and improvements in our environment that will facilitate success rather than create challenges.

We are a family during the school day.

The students enjoy when my staff and I swing them around, hold them upside down, give them great big hugs or squeezes, spin them around in an office chair, and wrap them in a sheet and swing them back and forth... anything to give them a sensory experience they are seeking. My students use a variety of picture schedules created based on their day and a picture exchange system to communicate classroom needs. I have 3 students that are learning to use the bathroom and 2 students that are so very active that they need up to 20 walks or scooter rides around the halls each day. We are all looking forward to spring!

My Project

Project S.A.F.E.'s goal is to create an environment eqipped with effective teaching tools where our children with very specific sensory needs can feel secure while they thrive.

The items that would make the most impact would be the 2017 iPads and covers.

We currently have one 2012 working iPad. Many educational apps we have used in the past include simple cause/effect apps to early literacy and math for students closer to a grade level. iPads are extremely helpful with students who struggle with transitions and turn-taking. We have even used iPads for toilet training children between the ages of 4 and 7. What a monumental impact on a family that makes!

The bean bag chairs would be a dream. Morning circle is a time when the children have an opportunity to learn about who they are and the world around them. Attending to group lessons is challenging for all of our students. Bean bag chairs are a wonderful way for children to comfortably attend a group lessons, feel secure and get the sensory input they need while they become more available to teach.

Other sensory items on my list would all be used throughout the day to assist in calming, motivating and awakening our children's unique system. Truly, any of them would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, we often have spills in our active classroom and absorbent paper towels go quickly. We use water tables or the sink everyday for more sensory activities which come along with puddles. We also have a number of toileting accidents that need quick clean-up while softer wipes help clean the child.

If you have read through my proposal, I sincerely thank you for your attention and consideration. I also have 4 assistants that would be over the moon with gratitude for any contributions made.
