About My Students
Students in the Academy each academic year must complete an Engineering Grand Challenge. These ladies have developed their own Project Runway: STEM Edition, which they will present to the community during the STEM Expo at our school.
Brenda and Samirah challenged themselves by learning to e-sew and decided to design dresses with E-technology that will light up and sparkle. It is their hope that this project will inform and motivate girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They will serve as role models as they pursue their CNA certificate while completing their college prep courses.
Through this STEM Project, Brenda and Samirah will learn through problem-solving as they sew projects for the first time. Their presentation skills will be enhanced through the preparation of conference presentations. In addition to improving and developing real-world math skills, this project will improve their knowledge and application of science, technology, engineering, and math while developing their entrepreneurship skills.
In Their Own Words
With this project, we will showcase different designs of upcycled dresses with LED technology. We are bringing awareness to the importance of upcycling. We will showcase our work as part of the STEM Expo at our school. We will also use our designs as part of the school recruitment efforts to encourage more girls to enroll in the STEM program.
We will design one dress and recycling old dresses for this project and we will communicate our messages about the importance of STEM through our designs. Taking on the lead in this project will help us develop leadership skills and learn how to take care of ourselves; therefore, preparing us for college at a four-year university.
We have learned that STEM is more than academic knowledge; it’s what happens during a project, group discussions, a presentation, or an activity. It’s the challenges, failures, and a-ha moments that allows us to develop and practice skills that will prepare us for success in a rapidly changing world. Many students don't like to hear the word NO! and approach life like a video game. Our goal is to help students appreciate these challenges and encourage young ladies to step into their future by learning about careers in STEM.
