Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Last year our middle school was redesigned. The school was redesigned due to the academic and discipline problems. We had an excellent first year and are excitedly preparing for our second year. All of our students made tremendous academic gains and most importantly the students' attitudes about themselves and their peers has changed dramatically. Students feel a sense of pride when they say they are from The Bronx School of Science Inquiry and Investigation.
We have an excellent school-wide system for discipline that is based on positive rewards for excellent behavior and achievement. The system is called Project Pride and each week students take home a letter stating whether they earned Project Pride for that week or not.
Our student government came up with a plan to enhance project pride. The student government, working with teachers and administrators, would like to hand out "Pride Dollars" each week to reward student achievement throughout the week. Then at the end of the week, the student government will open the "Pride Store" and students can spend their Pride Dollars on much needed school supplies.
The average income level of our students is very low and 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students come each day without the necessary supplies to support the educational program. Having a student government run store would help supply these materials as well as continue to build community and the self-esteem of our wonderful students.
