My Students

My students are from multiple diverse backgrounds, living in a micro-urban community consisting of all socioeconomic statuses. Many of my students are inquisitive and eager to learn but have never traveled outside of Illinois or, in many cases, Champaign-Urbana. In my classroom, we view books as a way to understand the world and travel beyond the walls of Edison Middle School. We are moving into our largest unit of the year, Dystopian Fiction and are looking forward to relating the topics of this unit to current events in American culture.

My Project

Unfortunately, due to wear and tear (and students thoroughly enjoying) our Modern American Historical Fiction Core Text, our copies of those books are on their last legs. I am looking forward to teaching the novel Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith for at least three more years and would LOVE to have new copies for new groups of students throughout those years. This book features a female protagonist of color and highlights her struggles as she attempts to become a pilot in World War II. It is important for my students to be able to see themselves in their protagonists and this book has given students an opportunity to feel represented.
