My students love to read! Even more importantly, they love to discuss the books that they have read! I have students between 6-8th grade who come to my room to borrow books to read. I love to have a diverse collection of books for students to borrow and read. Once one student reads a book, then they share that book with another student and another student. They are the best advertisement to get other students to read books. Many of my students are reading above their grade levels and need other books to challenge them.
My Project
I have started a Project LIT club at my school. Project LIT is a club for all students at our middle school (6-8th graders). The students read diverse books and come together once a month to discuss the books: Lu, The Stars Beneath our Feet, Ghost Boys, etc.
We have worked with college students from a nearby college, teachers at our school, and parents.
We will be discussing Wishtree with parents in our community and Lu with other teachers in our building. It is important for students to have access to diverse books so they can see themselves in their books and be able to have empathy for others. Our students love this club, but we need more support to get them the books that we are discussing.
