My Students

I work in a rural school. I am originally from Chicago and while it was a transition to a small-town school, I have grown to love this place! It’s the kind of school where a student heard I had never had fresh milk so he brought some to me on my birthday along with the cake! It’s the kind of place where students ask teachers to wear their football jerseys. My kids are awesome. They make me think in new ways and they stay in my life. I hear from them after they graduate, and they come back to help out at the school. It’s a truly wonderful community of really nice kids.

My Project

We do not often get the chance to simply sit and discuss books with students these days. Our curriculum has become more and more focused on standardized testing, and finding the time to talk about the issues and themes that books and literature can bring to students is being phased out. This is a tragedy. Our students need the empathy, the exposure, and the perspective of reading about others who may or may not be like them. They need to connect with characters and with each other. Project Lit allows us to do this. We began this last year with your support. Please help us continue.
