Hi, I am an 8th grade Special Education teacher at IS 232 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. IS 232 is a corrective action reform school in a high poverty area. I teach Earth Science and English Language Arts to two classes of students with learning and/or emotional disabilities. All 8th grade students must complete "Exit Projects" in order to move on to high school. These projects must be completed for Science and Social Studies. Traditionally students have used project display boards to present their research. These project boards seem a bit outdated and less than stimulating to the students. This year I would like to get rid of the "old school" project display boards by replacing them with PowerPoint presentations. I think they will find these much more exciting and more motivating. The students already have some knowledge of PowerPoint, but hopefully through this experience they will become proficient users and master this skill that is essential in the professional sector. Once they have completed their research on an Earth Science topic and documented it using PowerPoint each will make an oral presentation before the class. For this project the students will need memory sticks (USB Keys) to transport their work between home and school. Because the year is ending basic supplies are dwindling. Therefore, they will additionally need highlighters and notebooks for notetaking, and folders for keeping their projects once printed. New supplies will help revitalize the students and extend their computer and public speaking skills. Thank you!
