I teach at a Title I school where the majority of my students come from low income families. For most of them, the highlight of their day is coming to school where they get to use supplies and equipment that they normally would not have access to.
My students truly excel in their learning when they are fully engaged through a hands-on learning experience.
My students are able to enjoy their time in the classroom while they are learning new skills and having fun at the same time.
I know if they had more hands-on learning experiences their knowledge would increase at a faster rate. Children learn more through play and interaction with others, and with hands-on materials that can happen.
By having materials in the classroom that utilize hands-on learning, students are engaging in Kinesthetic learning.
By having alphabet and number stamps and a variety of dice available during our center time, students will have more opportunities to be fully engaged in their learning.
They are also using their critical thinking skills, and learning and growing from their mistakes.
"Scientists believe that when children use all of their senses it helps the brain create pathways that make it easier and quicker to retain information." I believe this statement and know that if we give our students these opportunities, we are putting them on the right path to succeed in our classroom and in their personal lives.
