My Students

I teach in a Title I school, where the majority of the students come from economically disadvantaged families. Our school is from PK to 8th grade where 100% of them receive free breakfast and lunch. 93% of my students are ELL students and they often lack learning support from home because both parents are working or have multiple jobs. Many of them lack the resources which also limits their range of learning experiences.

My class is made up of 60 wonderful students who are always ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them every day.

Despite their situation, they have always shown their eagerness and enthusiasm for learning. They come to school excited and ready to learn. I would like for them to sustain this eagerness of learning by providing them with fun and engaging activities that can be done outside of the classroom.

My Project

The students in our school mostly live in apartments and have little to no experience in what gardening is and what it is like to grow and harvest their own food. The objective of this project is to give my students the opportunity to grow their crops and take turns in taking care of it. Each student will get their own set of gardening gloves, take turns in using the other gardening tools such as the wheel barrow, rake, and shovel. Students will also be assigned to water the plants, remove the weeds and till the soil.

The gardening tools that I have included in this project will help our students create our Green Turtle Garden.

This garden will serve an outdoor learning environment for my students so that they can apply the things that they have learned in the classroom to the real world.

I am so excited to have this project come to life. I know that my students will be just as excited to help create and take care of this garden. The experiences and lessons that they will learn in doing this project will definitely help them in their learning and expand their range of experience that they can apply in their lives.
