"Creativity is the secret sauce to science, technology, engineering and math" - Ainissa Rameirez.
My room is full of inquisitive students.
Our classroom is an ever changing environment as we strive to reach Common Core standards while still enjoying the process. One of my greatest goals is to help my students learn how to further their learning by asking their own questions and also how to seek the answers.
My students are amazingly determined at a Title I school. We have adopted a growth mindset this year which states that anyone can learn anything. Students truly take this to heart and rise to each and every challenge they encounter.
At our school approximately 35% of our students receive a lunch that is either free or at a reduced price. My students have never let this slow them down. School is a level playing field for them and they eagerly take advantage of the support and wealth of knowledge they receive. In my room, we focus on learning while having fun. We love to laugh and explore concepts authentically. I seek to create lessons and design activities that my students will enjoy.
My Project
My students seek to eat healthy and learn about where their food comes from. At lunch our students have the option to grab a few things off the salad bar. I notice they often avoid things they are not as familiar with, so we discuss them in class and I encourage them to try the new foods (typically it’s a vegetable!). As part of our science curriculum, students are briefly introduced to ‘plants,’ but we breeze through it quickly and my students are always disappointed they don’t get to eat any beans (one of the types of plants we sprout). I believe that by cultivating their own fruits and (gasp!) vegetables in class students will learn more about farming and nutrition while feeling a sense of ownership. Thus, they will be more likely to try and enjoy the healthier options they have at lunch.
My students are eager gardeners ready to tackle real world issues.
My students need to learn that anyone can grow their own food as long as key resources are in place. These seed pods, shears, and pollinator work with our existing indoor garden. They will allow my students to compare and contrast different species while conducting experiments. Also, students will acquire confidence in growing seeds and hope that one will never go hungry if you know how to grow plants.
