Project Green Smarts: Help Make Our School & Community Green

My students need 30 recycling bins to start a recycling program in our school.

I teach 6th and 7th grade General Science in a charter school in Pennsylvania. My school serves a high-need, predominantly low-income community, where more than 75% students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The demographic I serve is primarily African-American and Latino.

My students really enjoy science because they are starting to see how it impacts their lives on a daily basis. After a slightly rocky start, they are starting to see science as relevant on a daily basis. As a result, I have tried to create projects that encourage my students to adapt healthy practices and an environmental conscious. Recently, during our air pollution unit, my students got into a heated discussion about recycling. Seeing how passionate they were about recycling and seeing how my school didn’t recycle, I thought that this was a perfect opportunity to encourage my students to start a recycling program within our school. As an avid environmentalist, teaching my students to be environmentally responsible is extremely important….but I need your help!

The logistics of recycling have already been taken care of within my school. I have contacted our waste management, and they have agreed to start collecting our recycling. Additionally, the creation of the recycling program will coincide with a unit on the environment. The only thing is that we do not have recycling bins for each classroom. Because my school is a high-need school, we do not have the resources to buy recycling bins. That is why we are asking for 30 recycling bins to be donated to the school so that we can keep our classrooms, school and city clean for years to come!

By donating recycling bins to our school, you will not only be making our school more green, but you will also be making my students and future students more environmentally friendly. Teaching students recycling in school will have an immense impact on the community I serve, by making the lives they lead post-graduation more environmentally sustainable.
