My students are a wonderful mixture of high-poverty, free-lunch students to the average middle-class family. More than half, closer to 65%, receive free or reduced-price lunch, and are in need of basic supplies as well as engaging lessons.
They are students who want to do their best, even those who need a little nudge.
I have a diverse group of students from many different backgrounds. It is important for me to build relationships and create connections with each student in my class so they feel welcomed and appreciated. From the quiet one to the outspoken student, I want them all to feel my class is a place for not just learning, but caring as well.
My Project
My students have been studying all about waves for this unit. We want to do a project where they create sound chambers to see how they can insulate against sound waves. After their creations, each group will test their chambers and see how well their insulating works.
To make the presentations more exciting, audience students will use the neon markers to make notes of encouragement, give critical feedback, and “rate” how each sound chamber worked.
We will do this on our lab tables with the neon markers for more excitement and engagement of the students. My students are always nervous presenting so I want to help give relaxed atmosphere by having them enjoy hot chocolate or coffee with their class. They always find this to be a great treat!
