I teach an amazing group of special education students and a phenomenal group of gifted and talented students. A vast majority live well below the poverty line and have little opportunity to experience life outside of rural Ohio.
These students love life and have a passion for helping others.
These students enjoy adventure and a fast-paced life. They work very hard and are industrious in how they overcome the barriers that are associated with being a student in poverty.
My Project
My students often express that they do not read because they do not see themselves represented in literature. Where in English class can they see their ethnicity or sexuality represented? Books like The Hate U Give and Dantes and Aristotle allow a wider range of students to see themselves represent and is proven to increase pleasure reading.
These books would fill my classroom library with titles that appeal to all students, not a select few.
Whereas these are the only books some have access to, it would have an immeasurable impact.
Not only would it provide marginalized students access to literature with which they can relate, but it also allows the majority to see and experience a different culture and life view than their own.
