Help me give my students classroom books that show characters with diverse backgrounds and ambitions so my students can see themselves in the books we read!
My 5th grade students strive to be students of the world. Our rural school provides as many opportunities to have students reach outside our small community to reach their dreams as we can. They are a capable and motivated group who have BIG dreams of careers including math, science, dance, art, technology, sports, and more!
I have sixty-five students, comprised of English language learners, special education students, gifted-talented advanced learners, and more!
They are a group of students who love to STEM and deserve a safe space to grow into the young adults they are destined to be.
My Project
This year my students are participating in #classroombookaday. As the hashtag suggests, this is a project where teachers around the world carve time out of our busy days to sit down and read a book together. This shared reading experience is so important for students and something that busy families do not get to enjoy often enough! Funding these books will achieve our goal of students finding their joy for reading and share common reading experiences together.
There are endless benefits to reading aloud together and these picture books are perfect for reading aloud!
Classroom senses of community increase with time spent reading picture books together and students build a collective sense of empathy for characters and therefore one another. Reading together is also a time for students to see examples of different cultures (like in the book The Three Little Tamales and An Ode to a Fresh Cut), problem-solving, teamwork, and overcoming challenges (like in Cinder Edna), among others.
