I teach 176 engaged students who selected the biotechnology pathway because of its medical approach and hands-on opportunities. In a traditional year, we do so many hands-on labs such as the column chromatography you see in the picture. My students thrive in this environment as do I. Under the current situation, I seek online interactives and digital materials as our world has changed. After viewing the vendor's materials, I was fortunate to discover digitalized slides from WARDS that have all the tissue samples that the students would utilize in their microscope labs. I also saw a monitor that would be greatly helpful for student interaction and engagement as I will be able to see my students rather than just have one screen to manipulate the virtual world.
My Project
This project will enrich the virtual world and help my biotechnology students be more engaged. First, with the monitor, I will be able to see all my students rather than a small thumbnail of just a few of my students. This will definitely aid student-teacher interaction. I have 45 minutes of virtual, class time. Seeing all my students will critical to our discourse. This will help the students become more involved with class discussions.
The state of the art, high quality digitalized histology slides will help my students learn about the cells and cellular structures relevant to medical biotechnology.
To learn histology, it is important for students to be able to recognize the diverse cells of the human body at all magnifications. These digitalized slides from WARDS will allow me to provide that experience for my students even though they are in a virtual classroom. I was informed by WARDS that I will be able to use the slides and share my screen to simulate what they would see under the microscope in a classroom. Students can see real images and zoom up to 1,000 x the size of the objects. They can measure different structures and simulate fine focusing. Students can capture images to add to their digital notebook where they make annotations. This product will enhance student learning in both the virtual world and when we return to the classroom lab.
