Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of young scholars. The early college program specifically targets students who are traditionally underserved in colleges and universities. My students are the first in their family to go to college. They are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and at risk of not completing high school. At such an young age, my students are learning the discipline and academic behaviors that are necessary for success in higher education. They are dedicated and hard working!
At Lassiter ECHS, students spend all four years of high school on the campus of El Centro College in downtown Dallas.
My students are well prepared for life at a four year university after they graduate from Lassiter Early College.
My Project
College coursework requires access to technology and providing Chromebooks to my students will allow them to complete and submit their assignments to the online blackboard. Many of my students do not have Wi-Fi and technology access at home. Having access to a Chromebook will provide an easier alternative to staying late at school and give them more time to complete other coursework without the time limitations of computers at school. My students would be able to utilize the technology to prepare for further success through researching and preparing for college and career goals.
The small campus size allows faculty to support students’ college coursework through tutoring, skill enrichment, and the kinds of relationships that motivate them to do great work.
However, the majority of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and are unable to afford the technology that is required to do college level work. Helping my students will alleviate the costly pressure parents are under to pay for critical resources to facilitate their child's education.
My teaching mission at Lassiter Early College High School is to challenge our diverse population of first-generation college students to achieve academic excellence, uniquely blending high school and the first two years of college and providing our students with the social and emotional supports to become productive citizens.
