I work at a school for students with significant mental health needs. Despite their significant mental health needs they are a very inquisitive group with a variety of talents. Their are mathematicians, engineers, artists, programmers, writers ,athletes and actors/actresses all in my school and classroom.
I love using hands on approaches during as many of my lessons as possible and to integrate opportunities for them to show their strengths across the curriculum.
When they are given these opportunities my students truly shine and behavior issues go down significantly.
I would like to attend a 3 day Buck Institute Training on incorporating more project based learning in my classroom. I know that through incorporating more project based learning I will be able to raise student engagement and achievement.
Studies have shown that when implemented well, project-based learning (PBL) can increase retention of content and improve students' attitudes towards learning, among other benefits.
Project based learning also gives students more control over their learning. Research has also shown that more student centered versus teacher lead instruction has positive impacts on student achievement. This method of instruction also allows students to work on collaboration with one another which is something that all of my students continuously need to work on.
The Buck Institute Training will allow me to become energized as a teacher! The training will empower me to use project based learning strategies in my classroom which will make it more engaging and student centered. I will also be able to share what I learn with my fellow teachers to help change our school culture to one of project based learning and student centered classrooms to improve the engagement of our students school wide.
I have already been working to make my classroom more student centered and collaborative and I truly believe that this training will help to bring my classroom to the next level.
