Our students have become quite engaged in our PBL work (project based learning). A central part of the project based method is the student presentations, which have brought the whole community together to share. Our school is the only middle school in our town.
However, the economic diversity in our town has left some students at a disadvantage when preparing their presentations.
We are a fishing community that is now having to move into a new economy as the fishing industry is suffering and changing. At the same time, our proximity to a major city has brought in a growing professional population. We serve an increasingly diverse community, ethnically, racially, linguisticaly, and economically.
We have been working at building a positive community in order to break down barriers between the diverse groups that make up our student body.
My Project
There are many students in our school who cannot afford the art materials needed for preparing their Project Based Learning presentations. This request for markers, paints, paper and glue will fill this need.
Students will use the markers, paints, paper and glue to prepare their presentations that are the culminating work of their PBL investigations.
Having these supplies will help to level the playing field for all students so that the economic differences between the students are not as evident during their presentations. These presentations are for parents and the public, and all the students want to put their best foot forward. This is the time to show off what they have learned.
