This school year, my school decided to departmentalize the third grade. I am the math and science teacher for two classes. My homeroom is the ESL/bilingual classroom. I have a bilingual teacher that pushes in for math. My switch classroom is the inclusion classroom where the inclusion teacher follows her class for math and science. Our students are a very diverse group located in an urban area. They come from a variety of different backgrounds. About 70 percent of our students are economically disadvantaged. They are energetic and eager to learn. Although, they try to strive their very best, some are faced with many challenges on a daily basis. However, despite the challenges, they are a special group of young learners that are curious about the world around them and ready to explore it.
My Project
Project based learning is the focus for the school year. I have the opportunity to work on some amazing science and math projects in small groups with my class. We love to use the mystery science program online. My students enjoy the hands-on activities after each lesson. After the activities are completed, I would like to make a class slideshow with their projects. Currently, I do not have a printer that can handle the capacity needed to print these slides. Students would enjoy presenting to other classmates after completion. Students would display a sense of pride and accomplishment as they walk through the hallways and see their projects displayed. A Scholastic News subscription and the science kit would help supplement lessons throughout the school year.
