This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Running a business is hard work. This project based learning activity will turn my students into farmers!
Students that attend the STEM Academy live in a small rural town in Arkansas.
All students are on a free meal program. The majority of students are African American. The STEM Academy will begin its second year in 2013-2014. Project based learning is implemented in all subjects.
My Project
My students need a book, an incubator and fertilized chicken eggs. I plan on setting up the incubator and hatching eggs! We will learn about chick development and how to take care of baby chickens. Students will get involved with this lesson in math class, too. We will use math skills to build a coop. Once the chickens are old enough to hatch, we will sell eggs to community and find out our profit. My students need these materials to experience the basics of entrepreneurship and numerous additional economic concepts. They will become producers and consumers, make goods and provide services, divide labor and see interdependence firsthand as they work through this project.
Learning basic economic concepts will be brought to life as these fifth graders take a risk and become entrepreneurs with a Chicken Shack.
The lessons they learn in decision making will set them up to be successful citizens in the future. Hands-on activities to teach economic vocabulary will ensure that they grasp skills necessary to build a successful business.
