These students span the socioeconomic levels, though many are below middle-class. We have a fast-growing ESL population. This is a large school with a transient population, set in a tourist town that is part of a county-wide school district. Many students juggle part-time jobs with their families, sports participation, and academic responsibilities. We have an IB school-within-a-school, so we draw some highly academic-oriented students.
We're moving toward learner portfolios in the IB and Pre-IB courses, which can and should incorporate creative assignments.
My students need the materials to be creative with hands-on, project-based learning activities that we can use to display their diversity of learning in their portfolios. Student skills are not limited to what they can write in an essay!
My Project
The materials in this project would help me create activities that incorporate not only student language skills but also math and technology skills in practicing using the design software that would accompany the Cricut. We can use this machine in assignments such as literary analysis tee-shirt, projects that give students the opportunity to be more hands-on in displaying their depth of knowledge.
With these materials, students can create long-lasting, potentially marketable products that synthesize their analysis and learning in wearable and/or displayable forms.
Too often, creativity falls by the wayside while standard essays dominate the English classroom; this project would help broaden project-based learning opportunities. Students could even design their own projects, based on the machine's capabilities.
