Striving to provide a comfortable and engaging learning environment is my first priority as an educator. In this class, my middle school students are engaged in learning to become better readers and writers.
Sixth grade students are motivated through project-based lessons, student and teacher-led learning, and videos to become independent readers of fiction and nonfiction and writers of explanatory and argumentative texts.
No two students are the same, as each loves to read a different genre. In this inclusive classroom, content is presented through interdisciplinary learning, project-based learning, whole group and small group instruction. Our school is heavily driven by data and student growth, so watching my students’ progress in reading and writing throughout the school year is extremely rewarding.
My Project
Of my four classes, the student population ranges from students identified with learning and behavioral disabilities to students identified as gifted. More than half of my students come from low-income households and diverse living conditions, creating the need to provide basic classroom supplies.
Being able to provide basic classroom materials and supplies easily empowers students to be prepared for class and allows students to engage in project-based learning in my classroom.
Each of the items I requested promotes a positive environment that encompasses project-based learning, organization and independence in the classroom.
(Mesh Zipper Pouches)
In my classroom, students participate in independent reading. Over the years, books endure wear and tear. To provide accountability and independence for students, the mesh zipper pouches will allow students to protect classroom library books as they transport them to and from school.
Students sit in groups in my class. Working together and working independently, they share a table and a caddy of supplies including highlighters for annotation, art supplies for projects, note cards for studying, extra pencils and dry erase boards and markers for activities. Students are supposed to maintain the organization of these caddies; however supplies often go missing and ideally, supplies need to be replenished. The requested supplies would replenish what is missing and add new supplies to the group caddies).
(Composition Notebook)
In my Language Arts classroom, students will use composition notebooks to produce an interactive notebook to reflect grammar, figurative language and theme.
