Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are shrewd, savvy, brave, resilient and wise beyond their years. They attend a Title I school and live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. This is also the lowest academically performing school district in New York. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades six to twelve to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.
When my students enter the classroom and see an experiment set up, they are excited and curious and want to start exploring right away.
Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. My students truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom.
My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.
My Project
This project-based broadcast journalism proposal is a collaborative effort amongst 3 faculty members. We would like to provide our students with the tools and opportunity to take an active role in learning about science and social issues in the current world arena.
Students will gather data, conduct interviews, make observations, and return to the classroom to broadcast their findings and opinion pieces to their peers.
Students will use the Holy Stone Drone Quadcopter with WIFI Camera to calculate how long it will take the drone to cross a certain distance, and how the wind influences the drone’s path. They will use the Proster Anemometer to calculate wind speed and air flow velocity. The laser thermometer will be used to measure ambient temperature, ambient humidity, dew point temperature, and surface temperature. All of this data will be compiled by students using the iPad to create a weather forecasting segment. The Samsung Gear 360 Camera will make virtual field trips possible as viewers tag along with the student reporters and see things the reporters may even have missed at the time. The Fujifilm Instax Camera will add a retro touch and an immediate human interest perspective to their reports.
These materials will be used in conjunction with the green screen, microphones, and video recorders included in my colleagues' projects to create an interactive learning opportunity for our students.
