Progress Our Printmaking!

My students need print making paper, 2 sets of Gyotaku fish forms and 5 gel printing plates.

My Students

Pencils and paper can only get you so far in today's technology driven world. With a huge push to incorporate computer technology into our classrooms, I thought it would be a good idea to look to ancient technology for inspiration for our art program. Printmaking here we come!

My students attend a small K-8 school in central Illinois.

Our school has multi-age classes where students are in a class with the same teacher for two years. This structure provides every student with the experience of being a younger student and an older student within the same class and allows them to take on learning and leadership rolls simultaneously. They are a fun loving, vivacious bunch who feel more like family than classmates!

My Project

With the Gel printing plates and Gyotaku forms as well as special paper my students will be able to broaden their minds and art skills through experiencing, hands on, one of the world's oldest and most basic forms of art. These materials will give my students the opportunity delve into the fine art of printmaking. Gyotaku is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing or rubbing, dating from the mid-19th century, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches. It is an art form that is still practiced today in both Japan and western cultures and celebrated by adults and children alike. Printmaking spans many cultures and is also a very popular for of modern art and an important part of American history and world art history. The Gel printing plates that are purchased will provide the students with an affordable and sustainable alternative to purchasing a large and expensive printing press that our school would love to have but unfortunately do not have the space to house.

Along with being able to create amazing pieces of art based on a beautiful world rich in culture and color, my students will be able to share their printing experience with their community.

As an after school community outreach project, our Jr. Beta Club has requested the opportunity to take their love of art to local nursing homes to present an art lesson to residents. Working closely with our locals is a great learning and leadership opportunity and an amazing life lesson in compassion.
