My students need a Dash Robot, launcher attachments for our Dash Robots and some Little Bits and OSMO coding so that they can experiment with circuitry.
Our school is a large, K-5, elementary building located in a suburban community. Our learners are amazing in so many ways. They are very diverse and come from a variety of backgrounds. They love to be active, and movement helps many of them think. 25% of them receive free or reduced lunch, and 25% are Hispanic. Because of our increasing enrollment, teachers are working hard to find creative spaces for students to work that meet their needs as learners.
My Project
Hands-on activities are essential for learning and discovering. As an extension of learning, I am hosting an after school Maker Club for students in grades 1 and 2. They are able to join me for time in the DREAM Lab to work on makerspace activities. These are hands on STEM activities that they don't get to try during the regular school day.
All people are makers... finding the medium is essential.
In our DREAM Lab, students are creating using different mediums. My goal is to provide many different materials for students to create in the physical and virtual world. Additional materials help students who want to work on coding for the Dash robots and Little Bits to explore arduinos and circuitry, too. The OSMO coding helps those students who want to learn to code to do it in a very visual way. It is important for students to have access to materials that engage and encourage them to create.
The ability to be a maker is innate in all of our students. Creation is the cornerstone of the DREAM lab. We currently only have two Dash robots and one set of little bits, which hinders the amount of kids that are able to participate in these highly sought after activities.
