Programming Our Physical World

My students need BBC Micro:bit boards and cables to discover and learn how programming and physical computing are such a large part of our daily lives.

My Students

My middle school computer science students are a passionate, excited group of students that are eager to explore and learn new technologies and skills that impact our world. In our middle school, we have such a wide variety of students with diverse interests. In my classroom, my students thrive in a project-based environment as they work together on numerous projects throughout the semester.

My students want to apply emerging technologies into their lives throughout their school day.

They know this will have a profound impact on their future as they pursue different careers. My students are working to understand their place in a global digital community. They are always enthusiastic and love to learn new skills that they can share with others.

My Project

Modern technology is becoming more connected through global networking and the Internet of Things (IoT). With the Micro:bit, my students will learn how computer programming is used to control a vast number of connected technologies that we use each day.

Students will connect their virtual programs to the physical world.

They will first use block-based programming to create simple programs and games while they learn the basics of computer programming and microcontrollers. Students will then be tasked to use the Micro:bit, sync cable and portable battery pack, to create their own portable projects to share and demonstrate their skills in computer programming and physical computing.

With the built-in accelerometer, LEDs, light and temperature sensors, the Micro:bit will allow students to use the boards to observe and study real-time data with their projects. The possibilities become endless with the potential to incorporate the Micro:bit in a wide range of projects that offer hands-on experiences for students working together in a project-based environment.
