The students of my intermediate school come from many different backgrounds. We have a very diverse population including English Language Learners, students will special needs, as well high and low socioeconomic backgrounds. While Franklin, Tennessee is a very wealthy city, most of the schools in our district are Title I schools, including mine. Teachers have a very rigorous curriculum and I am always trying to find ways to teach the standards while engaging all students.
In the state of Tennessee, we currently have 6,387 open computing jobs, yet only 625 computer science graduates.
Teachers must prepare students for the upcoming job market. Not only will computer programming prepare students for jobs, but it engages the students! When asked their favorite subject, more and more students are saying computer science!
Last year, I provided the hour of code in the school library for all students. Every class had the opportunity to visit different stations with coding opportunities. The students were highly engaged, and repeatedly asked when they could come back for more coding! So I then worked with math teachers, as well as other subject areas, to create lessons that integrated coding into their core curriculum!
My Project
Students enjoy creating new inventions. The Microbits will allow students to learn math, science, and even ELA through computer programming. Computational thinking is part of ALL subject areas, so the students can use the Microbits with any subject! Students will be able to build a robot, create a picture with LED lights, measure the temperature, and so much more with the Microbits.
The Microbits will be used by the students to explore patterns, temperature, and to design projects.
My goal is to teach math, science, ELA, and Social Studies through computer coding! Let's keep the students fully engaged!
