My students need a laser printer to print out their professional portfolios that they will be working on over the course of the year.

I teach high school seniors with barriers to graduation and employment in a special program that helps keep them on track in high school and prepare them for the world of work after high school. My students are inner-city, low-income minority students who aren't fortunate enough to attend a school with plentiful resources.
My students have worked hard and conquered many obstacles to reach their senior year, but they are about to face their biggest challenge yet: entering the workforce in an economically depressed area where there is tight competition for even minimum-wage jobs. As their teacher, I want to give them an advantage when they enter the workforce. As an ongoing project over the course of the year, my students will create professional portfolios that will include their resume, cover letter, letters of recommendation, thank you letters, awards, autobiographies, and more. Not only will these activities help build the practical language skills they'll need on the job, but the portfolios themselves will help them get higher quality jobs so that they can become productive citizens and earn a living wage.
This school year, I rehabbed an old computer lab back into working condition with the help of some skilled students and generous faculty. We now have 24 working computers built primarily from the parts of old, broken computers. I am so excited by how much my students will be able to accomplish this year with regular access to the Internet and other modern tools of employment. The one thing we are missing is a printer so that their portfolios can be printed out and brought with them to interviews. A laser printer would allow us to print the most pages for the least amount of money, and help my students have something to take with them when they leave me at the end of the year: a portfolio that will give them the confidence to achieve their goals.
If you are able to give to this project, you will be doing more than furnishing a group of students with a printer. You will be giving them a vote of confidence that they can do something with their lives. You will be helping them to get jobs that will allow them to not only support themselves, but also become citizens who give back to others. Your donation will truly go a long way. Thank you.
