My students come from the eclectic neighborhoods of Brooklyn New York to study art at the Art Institute of Edward R. Murrow High School. They represent the most diverse high school in NY state -- different races, linguistic backgrounds, and income levels. Over 65% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. My students chose to attend the Murrow Art Institute for our dynamic four-year fine arts program where they learn painting, printmaking, sculpture, animation and figure drawing.
My students pour their talent into the art program in anticipation of attending competitive colleges and landing internships and entry into art programs in the City that Never sleeps.
As you can imagine the competition for these opportunities is steep! My students are competing with students from wealthy schools that have access to more financial resources and industry connections. To compete my students need access to professional equipment to create an industry-standard electronic portfolio. To do this my classroom needs a digital portfolio station. A digital Portfolio Station will consist of a digital 35mm professional camera with tripod, professional lighting, and backdrop.
My Project
A permanent classroom digital Portfolio Station is where my students will learn to prep, photograph and catalog their work. A Digital Portfolio Station will consist of a high-end digital SLR camera with a tripod and a professional lighting system with a backdrop. Many of my students do not have access to high-quality cameras, or the internet at home. This is a digital divide that I hope can be bridged by the creation of a Digital Portfolio Station.
To capture large paintings, the subtlety of prints, and the dimensions of sculpture and pottery, my students need appropriate equipment and technology as well as the skill and support of their art teacher.
Currently, students are making do with the resources they have, however it is limiting their ability to show colleges and the broader arts community the scope of their skill and talent. A professional-grade digital portfolio with quality images is often the difference between landing that awesome internship, winning an opportunity to hang their work in galleries, earning a competitive scholarship--or not.
My students have the artwork and the drive--now we just need a professional camera and lighting system to capture the genius of their ideas and talent.
