Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The challenge facing my students is the lack of diverse creative outlets. We are a student body of less than 200, so funding is low, as well as resources. My students need more options for project-based electives, as their only current options are 2d fine art and fashion.

My students are survivors and decision makers.

They choose to attend our school, even though there are only 6 teachers and less than 200 students. There is no lunchroom, no nurse, no football field, but we do have the attentive and caring staff they need to point them in the right direction for their individual lives. They are artist, creative, some live with complete families, some are homeless, and some are in group homes, but all of them want more options for their future. They can go straight to college when they graduate from our school, but will they have a well-rounded education? Definitely not as well-rounded as they'd like, but due to the lack of funding, our school suffers from a lack of resources. Our students are quite innovative, and with my help, started a video production club, which then turned into a small class. They create and produce a short film for the morning announcements each day, all on their own, but now, they need your help.

My Project

My students need camcorders to expand the production possibilities in the video production class. We're requesting two video cameras for the use of the video production program, as well as other classes. Right now, we have one camera, and one computer that is primarily used among 6 students for the morning announcements. It's open to the rest of the school, but it's difficult to lend out equipment that we don't have. These two cameras are all-weather, waterproof (up to 10 feet) and quite durable, making lending them out to students not as much of an issue as our one and only more delicate camera. Also, the video production kids would have more opportunities to film their own short movies without having to wait their turn for the camera. Other classes could borrow cameras to film labs, field trips, and other exciting events. Our classrooms will no longer be self-contained. Our students could more easily share our classrooms online with vlogs and documentaries of what happens at our school.

This project will create opportunities for more than just the six students we currently serve in the video production class.

Eventually, we would like to get another computer, , and hopefully an entire lab, so that we can start teaching digital photography, graphic design, and other classes that can utilize the technology, but right now it's baby steps. We need to catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to creative technology, and these students need to feel successful
