I teach 8th grade math at Southside Middle School. My students academic levels vary from low learners to advanced algebra students. I differentiate many of my lessons to best meet the needs of the students. I do quite a bit of group work in order to get the most out of each and every one of them.
I love when my students are faced with challenges and persist through to complete the problem or task put in front of them.
I encourage them to work in groups on higher level problems in order to hear different suggestions as to how to solve a problem. Working together allows them to try new strategies and and become better problem solvers.
My students work in pairs on multi-step word problems. It is best to use individual white boards with their own dry-erase marker to work through a problem together.
The quiz book allows them to practice math fluency with basic math skill and operations in order to strengthen their skills which will allow them to attempt higher level problems with more confidence.
Some students do not have access to a calculator or cell phone. Calculators should be available to all students in order to solve higher level math problems that focus more on problem solving and process rather than skill and drill.
