My students need materials including different lock types, lock boxes, and UV lights to create breakout boxes to enhance their critical thinking and problem solving abilities across all their subject areas.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A casual observer passing by my room might just hear a bunch of noise and see students up out of their seats moving around. From the outside looking in, there is noise, movement, all sorts of strange materials being put together in ways that no one thought about before. It might even be a little scary to the uninitiated.
If you are brave enough to step across the threshold and leave the soft padded carpet of the hallway to walk on the hard linoleum floor, you will encounter a group of students who are actively engaged, asking questions, planning a prototype, testing ideas, explaining force, motion, and other ideas to other students - or if the observer asks - my students will confidently explain their thought process to them.
My classroom is full of scholars who are doing their part to become the next generation of scientist, teachers, doctors, leaders.
My Project
Keeping a 5th graders attention can be difficult - getting a ten-year-old to read an informational article and pull important ideas can be even harder but solving a mystery to get a reward can get a student to focus and think critically without even realizing they are learning.
My project would get students out of their seats, collaborating with a team, thinking creatively to solve a problem and communicating with their peers!
All important skills that will carry them through life.
I recently attended a workshop that incorporated the popular breakout rooms where the participants have to find clues to escape the room in a given amount of time. I love how simple it is to do this in the classroom!
To create these tools I will use several re-settable locks, boxes, UV lights, and items to play "games" that require my students to work in a team. Leaders will emerge, kids will learn to communicate with each other and share ideas and information in a challenging situation that stretches their abilities all while enforcing concepts from different subject areas!
The best part of this idea is that it won't just be for my science class, these games can be created and shared with my entire fifth-grade team for reading, social studies, and math too! Students of all levels will be able to participate on their own terms!
