I teach over 100 students and love to challenge them and see them rise to the occasion. Our small Charter High School provides a unique opportunity for outstanding faculty-student relationships. Our students often mention that one of the reasons they love our school is that the faculty takes time to mentor them and encourage them on a routine basis.
My students come from one of the highest poverty areas in the state of Florida, but they are hard-working and are determined to get the best education that they can attain.
Some of my students move on to become the first member of their family to attain a post-secondary education.
My Project
The students in my mathematics classes benefit greatly from concrete examples. Scientific Labs can provide hands-on activities to help increase understanding and answer the age old question- "When will we ever need this in real life?".
Using Vernier Scientific Probes in my class will motivate and excite students, as well as show them how math is present in the world around them.
Here are a few examples. A vernier temperature probe can log data to show how Newton's Law of Cooling follows a specific mathematical curve over time. A light probe can measure the intensity of light and show how the intensity is related to the distance from the light source. Each of these examples are not simple linear relations.
My Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Math for College Readiness, and PreCalculus classes will greatly benefit from having access to these probes and they will be shared with other math teachers and science teachers. I already have plans for labs and projects related to using these probes, because I attended a summer workshop presented by the Vernier Company who makes these probes.
