Ms. Willingham from Memphis TN is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need resources to build cooperative learning centers: the book "Bullying in Schools", Math Sliders, Wire Cubes for group storage, and Hot Dots. We also need a pencil sharpener.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We are on a mission to terminate bullying in our classroom. I want students to learn to stand up for what is right by reporting acts of bullying and learning strategies for dealing with and preventing incidents of bullying. We shall start with Cooperative Learning Stations.
The students are a generation of creative thinkers and doers.
However, many live in a community of poor housing. Many jobs for the parents are located outside the community. Therefore, the students are leaving and arriving home without adult supervision. At least 95% of the students at our school are on free lunch and qualify for fee waivers. One important concept that thrives in the community is having resources for example, money or school supplies.
The Bullying In Schools book will allow us to learn different strategies for dealing with bullies. The first strategy we will use in class to discourage bullying is cooperative learning. The assortment of learning games and activities will promote cooperative learning to practice teamwork skills. By working together, students will get to know one another on a deeper level and develop stronger relationships. This collaboration will help create a classroom culture of respect that does not tolerate any form of bullying. For example, the Math Sliders serve as reinforcement for math skills that pairs of students will use to assess each other to discuss the correct answers. Each group will rotate Sliders (fractions, money, graphs, etc.) on a weekly basis. The Safco Wire Cubes will serve as storage for each group of 4 students. With the amount requested, we will have 5 groups of 4 cube sets. The Hot Dots will serve as an engaging Anchor Activity after students complete their class work.
My goal is to provide students with a safe and nurturing environment in which to learn.
By creating a classroom free of bullies, students can focus on their education while knowing that they are accepted for who they are. The materials requested will allow me to create and implement differentiated instruction in my classroom that will help students focus on skills that need to be reinforced. These learning opportunities will not only be fun but will directly contribute to their success.
