My students are energetic and eager to learn each time they step foot in a classrooms. Every day I'm met with their smiles and enthusiasm that is ready to attack whatever task the day holds. However, they face many challenges outside of school which influences their behavior and decision making skills. These two factors have an impact on students attendance and academic performance.
We are a Title I school where we have a significant percentage of our students that qualify as being economically disadvantaged.
Students that suffer from these external factors are struggling socially, emotionally, and academically in school. As a school, we have implemented the Postive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) to promote positive student behavior by rewarding students behavior bucks. These bucks allow students to purchase valuable school materials that are prizes on our bucks bus. Our vision is by using positive enforcements we can educate students on appropriate behaviors to aid a safe, engage, and enrich school climate and culture for all staff. Our students are wonderful, and each day they continue to press towards the mark of greatness through their hard work and perseverance.
My Project
Our schools PBIS uses material prizes to attract students attention. These prizes are incentives to promote positive behavior throughout the school in the classroom, hallway, and cafeteria. Students can earn behavior bucks to purchase items off of our bucks bus. Prizes such as multi-color pens to scented pencils not only seem attractive to students but these items also ensure that they are prepared to learn. By reinforcing students behaviors, our goal is that we see an increase in student attendance while seeing a decrease in student disciplinary referrals. Changing these two factors allows us to enhance students academic achievement. It also prepares students for high school as they graduate college and career ready.
