Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and enthusiastic learners. They come to school with a multitude of abilities and aptitudes reflecting their diverse backgrounds. Many are still acquiring fluency in English.
Although they come from a community with fewer privileges than others in Silicon Valley, my students have unlimited potential.
We are working hard every day to achieve so that they can compete with the best of the students in Silicon Valley. Our students deserve to have quality materials and experiences to help them achieve their personal best.
My Project
In our class we have an classroom economy reward program to motivate student learning. When I catch students being good I hand out slips that represent our classroom currency. Currently they are little slips of paper that represent Aztec gold that is related to our unit on Mesoamerican civilizations. When students are the first to follow directions, collaborate with others and/or show respect they are given the Aztec gold. If they do not show effective learning behaviors, the Aztec gold can also be taken away. Students collect the Aztec gold and save it. At the end of each trimester, there is an auction and swap meet to use their money to buy things. This classroom economy is highly motivating.
The hope is that by encouraging students with extrinsic incentives will help them later on to develop intrinsic motivation to learn.
Our project is requesting some fun prizes to reward our students. We are asking for little trinkets that fifth grade students would love to have: scented kneadable erasers, squish balls, trendy stickers, squish animals and mechanical pencils. Please help us to fill up our classroom swap meet so that our students continue to be motivated to keep on learning!
