Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 6th through 12th grade students are redefining possible at our charter school in Texas. Many come from low-income families and struggle with a variety of issues before they even walk into the classroom. As a reading interventionist and the school’s librarian, I’ve seen all of our students embrace a whatever-it-takes attitude to ensure their personal literary growth.
Our students are hardworking, determined individuals with a desire to attend college; many would be the first to do so in their family.
Our goal as a school is to provide a rigorous curriculum, build meaningful student relationships, and provide experiences outside of the classroom as we prepare them for college and beyond.
My Project
We're in our 11th year of school and our readers are growing stronger than ever! Part of what makes our kiddos so successful is the constant praise and feedback given when they check out a JRB, a "just-right" book, in the library. They are eager to develop their identities as readers and frequently visit the library to check out what's new and take reading quizzes online.
I am requesting reading incentives, such as pencils, erasers, slime, and candy, to further motivate our students to track their progress and growth after passing a reading quiz.
Students are encouraged on an ongoing basis to log how many words they are reading through the program Accelerated Reader, a tracking tool that also provides a plethora of comprehension quizzes. As the school's librarian, my goal is to continue to provide students with different ways to help spark their love of reading - and what better way than through a reading prize?
