Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are children with special needs. Their primary disability is autism. Many of them have secondary disabilities that range from speech impairments to intellectual disabilities. They live in a low socioeconomic area. Many are second language learners as well. The school they attend is highly supported, but with limited resources, it is difficult to provide everything.

These students have very high needs, and they often go without critical resources.

They thrive in an environment that is supported with visuals to explain what something is in a way they understand. Some also use visuals to communicate.

My Project

My students work hard throughout the week. I have been trying to teach them to connect their work to the money they earn for the prize center. We use the prize center for two reasons. It is used as a positive reinforcement system and also as a way to teach financial responsibility to our students with Autism. It is often difficult for students with Autism to develop internal motivation for work. We use a lot of positive reinforcement to help our students grow in this area.

We need high-interest items for the students to work towards earning.

These items include LEGO Super Hero, Minecraft, Creator, and Race Team kits, slime, costumes, phone straps, and other toys. These are items that the kids find highly motivating and want to work hard to buy. The kids enjoy getting to earn money for their work like the adults around them, and they especially love getting to spend it on Friday.

It is not easy keeping the prize center stocked. These items are quite expensive and the total adds up. Your donation will go a long way towards helping us stock our prize center.
