This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are extremely creative and expressive. They have so much to say about their lives and the world we live in, but many of them have had very limited exposure to the arts. Our art department is in its third year, and we hope to work with a greater variety of materials! Our public charter high school is a neighborhood school that accepts any student who lives in the surrounding areas (North Philadelphia).
The art room is an inclusive environment where students of all levels and backgrounds work together to create beautiful and meaningful artwork.
Students tell me all the time how much art class helps them relax from their stressful schedules. The artwork that students create not only makes them feel good; it is celebrated by the entire school community. Students love showcasing their artwork for everyone to see.
My Project
Students in introductory and advanced art classes have been studying the artwork of Favianna Rodriguez. This artist uses printmaking to draw attention to social justice issues. Our students have also been organizing themselves around school-safety. They coordinated an awareness-raising march, and they are preparing a theatrical showcase.
Students will learn a variety of printmaking techniques by making artwork about peace, non-violence, and school-safety.
We will use linoluem blocks, carving tools, printing inks, gel printing plates, and erasers to explore a variety of printmaking techniques. The prints we create will be displayed and distributed at our end-of-year showcase. Our school and our students have felt the effects of violence, and they are becoming leaders and advocates. Our hope is that the showcase and the artwork will inspire and educate the community.
