Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are children that are bilingual Spanish speakers, with special needs ranging from pre-k to 5th grade. Students come to my room from all walks of life, with different struggles and stories that some of us cannot imagine. Yet they manage to come to school and try their best and in the process win our hearts and teach us lessons we didn't know we needed to learn ourselves.
Sometimes things can become quite difficult for them whether it be academically, emotionally, or both.
And I think we can all relate to that to some degree. Sometimes all my students need to shine is a chance to show what they are good at or what they love. Or a chance to do things the best way they know how, which can manifest in different ways. And that's a beautiful thing because "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?"
My Project
Many times students with special needs will have "visual aids" listed as an accommodation in their Individualized Education Plan, after all they say a picture is worth a thousand words and I believe that to be true. Teaching a variety of small groups of students with special needs in grades pre-k through grade 5, you can imagine that we need ample visual aids, graphic organizers, personalized notes, personalized anchor charts, you name it. Having personalized materials is part of the accommodations that we put in place in order to help students be successful. Visual aids in particular are an accommodation that most of our students need in order to understand new concepts. Sometimes a visual is that extra piece that helps the light bulb flicker on for many students in general, including those coming from ESL backgrounds. Visuals are very special because it is one of the few things in this world that many people can understand or connect to, despite differences in language, culture, experiences, etc.
