Printing Their World in Color

My students need access to a color printer. As the paper and ink are consumables, they also need a year's supply of colored ink and photographic paper.

My Students

My 7th and 8th-grade students live in a small rural town in Michigan. They are typical energetic, enthusiastic and artistic 11-14-year-old kids. They come from a variety of family situations, and have experienced many successes, anxieties and failures. Middle school students are in a phase of life where things are happening and things are changing; where socializing and sharing on social media is their routine. Creativity, memories, and sharing outside of social media is not their norm.

My students need a creative outlet to preserve their middle school memories; outside of social media.

Taking selfies and pictures of friends is great fun and a daily occurrence, but kids need a positive use for all these "memories." Many of their daily classes focus on the academics; challenging their mind with facts and analysis as they expand their knowledge base. This is essential, however, many students need a creative outlet. They crave a way to show who they are and what they believe in.

My Project

My students need a creative outlet to preserve their memories outside of social media. My school has given me the opportunity to offer classes that provide students with this creative outlet for preserving their middle school memories. One class is "Yearbook" and the other class is "Photograph Projects." My students have devices to take photographic memories, but they need a access to a color printer and printer paper to bring their photos out of the cloud and into print. That is why our classroom needs your help.

Students love taking pictures of themselves (selfies) and those around them, however, their pictures remain unused.

Photographic Projects is a class that combines artistry, and photography to create forever projects from student photos.

Printed photographs will be used for students to make visual representations of themselves, their goals and dreams. The color printer, along with the photo paper and colored ink will allow these projects to happen-in full living color. Without them, students are limited to the old black and white printer using printer paper.

Yearbook is a class where students learn to take photos of the students and events that occur during the school year. During the year, hundreds of photographs are taken, yet few make it into the yearbook. With a printer, the Yearbook students can create photographic collages to frame and display their works. Bulletin boards of student successes, friendships, and academic achievements can be displayed in the hallway, allowing students to find themselves in photos and take them home. Memories are meant to be shared. Memories should be seen. Being able to display and share full colored memories, would be possible if our class had access to a color printer.
