Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title 1 high school for Students with Disabilities in the Bronx. Many of our students come from single parent/guardian homes with limited to no access to materials or outside experiences. The school has 6:1:1, 8:1:1, 12:1:1, and 12:1:4 populations of boys and girls all with various disabilities and academic levels. The students take pride in their work and achievements. It is necessary for these students to learn academics, social skills, and other necessary skills to be a part of their community post 21 years old. It is the teacher's job to make it functional and applicable to the every day lives of the students. By having certain technology and supplies, we are able to better teach and serve our students.
In the new world of blended and remote learning, engaging the students and creating safe spaces for them is very important.
This is new for the students, so it is necessary for teachers to have the tools and resources to support students and families within the school building and at home.
My Project
The ability to print resources, visuals, and work is critical for the learning of every student. Because we have such a diverse population, there are various things that need to be printed on a daily basis. Some of the things we need to print for our students are manipulatives, visual, transition cards, schedule icons, cut and paste activities, student work, and other necessities depending on the particular class and students.
Not every classroom has access to individual technology for the students and continue to print out activities to keep the students learning and engaged.
Even though we have moved towards a more technological way of educating our students, we still have students that respond and learn better with hands on activities. Some of these classes also need to print out visuals for manipulatives and schedules to help with lessons and transitioning Our students require visual supports to aid them with learning and transitioning for the school day.
Having access to printers will also allow us to support the students and parents in their homes. We will be able to print out necessary visuals to help students stay in routines at home and help parents communicate and help their students. This helps to foster the school and home relationship and keep things moving in a positive forward fashion for the students when not in the structured school environment.
