As a teacher in a city, that has alternately been described as one of the poorest and most dangerous cities in the country, I understand that my students and families face many different challenges. My children are bright, inquisitive, and eager to learn. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
From the moment my students enter the school they become learners.
I believe that student achievement is directly tied to the perception of teachers in the school and parents of a student's promise and ability to learn. I may not be able to control their time outside the school, but for every moment they are in school, I give them every opportunity to show that they are the smartest second graders in the universe. I control their experience during the school day with the intention of showing them that learning will be a positive experience. By doing this, in a positive way I can encourage them to reach for their goals.
My students will benefit from the use of this printer when they can create and print their own projects. Students are able to access information from technology that exists within the classroom which helps them create their own stories and reports. My students enjoy researching new topics in fiction and non-fiction topics. The especially like researching animals and their habitats. As of now, the students do not have a way to print their projects in color for display. Because of the low socio-economic area in which my school is centered, many of the children do not have access to printers in their homes.
A printer in the classroom would allow the children to create documents and projects and print them for display.
The students would love to be able to show the fruit of their labor. Such success in completing a project, that can be printed in color, would encourage them to continue in their academic pursuits.
