Help me give my students a laser color printer to produce classroom newsletters.
Dr. Temple Grandin wrote, "There needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do instead of what he cannot do." I am a speech-language pathologist at a New York City public middle school specialized for students with moderate to severe types of intellectual, social-emotional, and physical disabilities.
Many of my students are non-verbal or have limited communication skills.
I work with classroom teachers and other service providers to identify and implement strategies to develop the communication skills needed to succeed academically and socially independently. My students receive small-group therapy in and out of their classrooms and are working on improving their language and literacy skills, phonological awareness, and social/pragmatic skills.
Regardless of their current levels of communication skills, we identify and highlight their strengths across all activities throughout their days. My students thrive in our positive learning environment where their small successes are celebrated everyday.
My students learn to tell stories by recounting personal experiences. Throughout the school year they complete amazing projects which become great materials for their storytelling. As a speech-language pathologist, I always try to elicit storytelling by engaging students in hands-on experience they would be motivated to talk about.
My students are very motivated to create a classroom newsletter based on their own classroom experiences and share them with their friends and families.
I encourage them to use writing, typing, drawing or symbols to share their stories depending on their current language and literacy skills. The skills learned in producing a newsletter enhance students' language and literacy development in a functional and enjoyable way.
In addition, the newsletter helps to build positive relationship between the parents/guardians and the school by sharing and celebrating successes of our students. I have seen how the meaningful storytelling can positively affect the level of confidence in my students and hope the additional resource will help them grow even more!
