Our school was opened as an alternative site for low-income and English-learner students. 1/3 of our students are classified as English-language learners, according to the California Department of Ed. About 90 percent of our students qualify for free and reduced meals.
These students are some of the neediest, yet hardest workers in the district.
Our students come from single and multiple family homes and some live in shelters. Most do not have access to school-related necessities that will help them complete school projects.
After 4 years of teaching 2nd grade, I am moving up to 5th grade. In the lower grade level, I assigned classroom projects, but the students had fill-in the blanks worksheets and did not need to print their assignments. This year my students will benefit from having a color printer and ink in the classroom because they will be able to complete their assignments without worrying about where and how to print their completed projects.
I want to have the appropriate tools to help my students complete their projects and prepare them for the next grade levels and beyond.
Most of the students come from low-income homes that do not have access to a printer or cannot afford to pay for copies at a local store or library. I want my students to complete each assignment or project stress-free.
